2023, Alaska Volcano Observatory to Visit Sitka

Representatives of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) will be in Sitka May 4 – May 9, 2023, to keep the community updated on the volcano’s low-level unrest. They will do radio interviews, give a public talk, and be available for some Q&A sessions.

Events are free and open to the public.

Thursday, May 4

8:15 am: Tune into KCAW for a morning interview with AVO scientists.

Saturday, May 6

6 pm – 8 pm @ Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi, 200 Katlian St: The Sitka community is invited to attend a short presentation by AVO geoscientists and participate in a friendly meet and greet to exchange ideas and questions afterward.

Sunday, May 7

10:30 am to 12:30 pm: Join SAIL for an Interpretive Walk with scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Meet at Kimsham Ballfield Cross Trail entrance. Short walk to tephra (ash) demonstration and talk, then continuing on to observe volcanic deposits along the Cross Trail.

Monday, May 8

7 pm @ UAS Sitka Campus, Room 229: UAS Natural History Seminar “An Update on Mount Edgecumbe from the Alaska Volcano Observatory” Keep informed about the low-level unrest occurring at Mount Edgecumbe and learn about plans by the Alaska Volcano Observatory and partners to study and monitor the volcano. Audience questions encouraged!

Tuesday, May 9

10:30 am @ Sitka Sound Science Center Karsh classroom: SSSC Sprouts program for preschoolers and their guardians will feature AVO geoscientists and a volcano-focused lesson.

11 am: Call in or listen to KIFW’s Problem Corner to chat with AVO geoscientists.

6 pm – 8 pm @ UAS Sitka Campus, Room 229: Artchange, Inc., and University of Alaska Southeast present “Fire of Love” – an award-winning National Geographic documentary film. A free, educational screening open to the public, Q&A with scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory after the film. Doors open at 5:45 pm; film is rated PG.
